It can be argued that telenovelas are a reflection of society's view of traditional gender roles. Furthermore, it also reflects the expectations society has for women. It also says a lot about what kind of story people like to hear. For example, when telenovelas were first created they all followed the same Cinderella type story line. However as time progressed they started expanding storylines where women had more independent or nonconforming roles and at the same time women were breaking gender stereotypes in real life. Some examples of breaking the Cinderella mold are ciudad Bendita, Costa Rica, and La Mujer perfecta. More can be said about society's reaction as well. Would society have accepted theses non-cinderella type stories if they were released when telenovelas first started? Can Telenovelas act as a pathway to break traditional gender roles? Did telenovelas have any role in society's view of breaking traditional gender roles?
