Open Response Two

In my continuation of Tierra de Reyes, I have been fascinated with the use of doppelgängers. The plot of the telenovela involves the three Gallardo brothers (Arturo, Flavio, Samuel) trying to avenge the death of Alma (their younger sister), by seeking revenge on her boyfriend's family, who they believe to be responsible for her suicide. Ultimately their revenge fails, as they fall in love with the Del Junco sisters (Sofia, Andrea, Irina, the daughters of Ignacio, Alma's boyfriend). Several episodes in, the Gallardo's are attending a party at the Del Junco ranch, and family friends arrive. Octavio and Miranda Saldivar, and their daughter Veronica, who looks just like Alma! I have seen doppelgängers used as plot twists in other shows before, and they're generally the polar opposite of the protagonist. Or they are a reflection of the darkest parts of the protagonist. But, in Tierra de Reyes, Veronica has been kind, caring, and honest. She is very similar to Alma in her characteristics as well as her actions. There was a scene in one episode where Veronica was joking around with Flavio, and she pinched his nose. We get a flashback in which Alma, Flavio's sister, does the exact same thing. Veronica seems to be connected to Alma. In another episode, Irina Del Junco and Flavio Gallardo are kidnapped and stranded in a forest. Later that night, Veronica is dreaming and Alma guides her through the forest and shows her where Flavio is. The show introduces this idea of spirits and souls that are connected. The Gallardo's treat Veronica as a gift that life has given them, and they see Alma through Veronica, almost as if Alma is using Veronica to protect her brothers.

The number of obstacles the protagonists face have not stopped. Although the Gallardo's were eventually discovered as being related to Alma, the Del Junco sisters, after some time, still chose to be with them. However, their mother Cayetana, and Sofia's ex-husband Leonardo, are still doing everything they can to separate them. There was also the addition of Isadora Valverde. She fell in love with Arturo, but once he rejected her, she has been determined to keep him and Sofia apart.

In class we spoke of epic love stories in which the protagonists are made to be epic, but minor love stories have taken some of the attention from them. In Tierra de Reyes, Arturo and Sofia are the main protagonists as they are the older siblings of the Gallardo's and the Del Junco's. However, Flavio and Irina, and Samuel and Andrea, have also become couples, and I've started to notice the divide in my own attention. Although I want each of the couples to end up together, (and because this is a traditional happy ending telenovela, I know they will), I find myself anxious for the scenes between Irina and Flavio, but even more so, Andrea and Samuel. The relationships in the show manage to be very similar, but also incredibly different, and it is hard to say why I'm drawn to one relationship more than the other.

I have also been drawn to some of the minor characters in the telenovela. Most recently, Dario, a friend of Irina and Flavio's and Veronica's cousin. He is the only gay character in the show, but not every character acknowledges this. He's incredibly lovable as a character, and they managed to portray his sexuality in a very natural way, at least so far. I am curious to see whether they will ever introduce a love interest for him.

There are so many plot components, characters that I love and hate, and a multitude of reasons to keep watching this show. I am completely addicted at this point.
