Telenovela Commentary: Rubi
As
my telenovela I chose Rubi, and from
the first few episodes I can tell it is structured like your traditional “Rosa”
telenovela, just maybe with a little bit of a twist. The show begins with a
love story of two characters, and shortly another couple begins to develop as
well. But unlike other telenovelas, the main character, that the show is
actually named after, appears to be the antagonist. She is the one that seems
to have the evil and sneaky qualities, whereas the other main characters appear
to be more nice and genuine. I am interested to see where this goes and if Rubi
will continue to become worse, or instead become a better person because of the
people she is surrounded by. Although I’m not sure yet, I’m afraid Rubi is going to become worse as she is
already being flirtatious with her best friend’s lover, as well as not very
nice about her behind her back. She is also not being honest with her family,
and she’s a bit of a gold-digger who is only concerned with money rather than
the more important things in life. The show is quite interesting so far. It’s
just not quite what I expected from the main character. Normally that’s who you
like and identify most with in a show, but in this case I don’t like her very
much at the moment. It is also very fast paced—as I expected from class (but am
not yet used to). The characters fall in love faster than other shows, and it
seems like we’re moving very quickly in the direction of the obstacles/problems/misunderstandings
part on the spectrum of the show.
